ACEA Specifications Explanation
The category indicates oils for different purposes or applications within that general class, related to some aspect or aspects of the performance level of the oil. Typical applications for each sequence are described below for guidance only. Specific applications of each sequence are the responsibility of the individual motor manufacturer for their own vehicles and engines. Oils within a category may also meet the requirements of another category, but some engines may only be satisfied by oils of one category.
Gasoline and Diesel Engine Oils
A1/B1 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in gasoline engines and car & light van diesel engines specifically designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a high temperature / high shear rate viscosity of 2.6 mPa*s for xW/20 and 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s for all other viscosity grades. These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
A3/B3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline engines and car & light van diesel engines and/or for extended drain intervals where specified by the engine manufacturer, and/or for year-round use of low viscosity oils, and/or for severe operating conditions as defined by the engine manufacturer.
A3/B4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high performance gasoline and direct injection diesel engines, but also suitable for applications described under A3/B3.
A5/B5 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in high performance gasoline engines and car & light van diesel engines designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature / High shear rate (HTHS) viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
Catalyst compatibility oils
C1 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high
performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines requiring low friction, low viscosity, low SAPS oils with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 2.9 mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life and maintain the vehicles fuel economy.
Warning: these oils have the lowest SAPS limits and are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
C2 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high
performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines designed to be capable of using low friction, low viscosity oils with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 2.9mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life and maintain the vehicles fuel economy.
Warning: these oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
C3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high
performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines, with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life.
Warning: these oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
C4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high
performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines requiring low SAPS oil with a minimum HTHS viscosity of
3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life.
Warning: these oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

Heavy Duty Diesel engine oils
E4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing excellent control of piston cleanliness, wear, soot handling and lubricant stability. It is recommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under very severe conditions, e.g. significantly extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is suitable for engines without particulate filters, and for some EGR engines and some engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers so Driver Manuals and/or Dealers shall be consulted if in doubt.
E6 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing excellent control of piston cleanliness, wear, soot handling and lubricant stability.
It is recommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under very severe conditions, e.g. significantly extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is suitable for EGR engines, with or without particulate filters, and for engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. E6 quality is strongly recommended for engines fitted with particulate filters and is designed for use in combination with low sulphur diesel fuel. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers so Driver Manuals and/or Dealers shall be consulted if in doubt.
E7 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing effective control with respect to piston cleanliness and bore polishing. It further provides excellent wear control, soot handling and lubricant stability. It is recommended for highly rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under severe conditions, e.g. extended oil drain intervals according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. It is suitable for engines without particulate filters, and for most EGR engines and most engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers so Driver Manuals and/or Dealers shall be consulted if in doubt.
E9 Stable, stay-in-grade oil providing effective control with respect to piston cleanliness and bore polishing. It furtherprovides excellent wear control, soot handling and lubricant stability. It is suitable for engines with or without
particulate filters, and for most EGR engines and for most engines fitted with SCR NOx reduction systems. E9 is strongly recommended for engines fitted with particulate filters and is designed for use in combination with low sulphur diesel fuel. However, recommendations may differ between engine manufacturers so Drivers Manuals and/or Dealers should be consulted if in doubt.

API – American Petroleum Institute
API’S CERTIFICATION MARK AND SERVICE SYMBOL identify quality motor oils for gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles. Oils displaying these marks meet performance requirements set by U.S. and international vehicle and engine manufacturers and the lubricant industry. More than 500 companies worldwide participate in this voluntary program, which is backed by a marketplace sampling and testing program.
THE API CERTIFICATION MARK, ALSO KNOWN AS THE “STARBURST”
An oil displaying this mark meets the current engine protection standard and fuel economy requirements of the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), a joint effort of U.S. and Japanese automobile manufacturers. Automobile manufacturers recommend oils that carry the API Certification Mark. See the ILSAC STANDARD FOR PASSENGER CAR ENGINE OILS chart below for descriptions of current and obsolete ILSAC standards.

Gasoline engine oil categories (for cars, vans, and light trucks with gasoline engines): Oils designed for gasoline engine service fall under API’s “S” (Service) categories. See inside for descriptions of current and obsolete API service categories. Diesel motor oil categories (for heavy-duty trucks and vehicles with diesel engines): Oils designed for diesel-engine service fall under API’s “C” (Commercial) categories. VISCOSITY GRADE
The measure of an oil’s ability to flow at certain temperatures. Vehicle requirements may vary. Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations on SAE oil viscosity.
RESOURCE CONSERVING or ENERGY CONSERVING
These designations apply to oils intended for gasoline-engine cars, vans, and light trucks. Widespread use of “Resource Conserving”or “Energy Conserving” oils may result in an overall savings of fuelin the vehicle fleet as a whole.
MULTIPLE PERFORMANCE LEVELS
Oils designed for diesel engine service might also meet gasolineengine service. For these oils the designation is “C” category firstfollowed by the “S” category. “C” category oils have beenformulated primarily for diesel engines and may not provide allof the performance requirements consistent with vehiclemanufacturers’ recommendations for gasoline-fueled engines.
THE API SERVICE SYMBOL WITH CI-4 PLUS
The “CI-4 PLUS” designation identifies oils formulated to provide a higher level of protection against soot-related viscosity increase and viscosity loss due to shear in diesel engines. When originally introduced, CI-4 PLUS identified CI-4 oils meeting a higher level of performance. CJ-4 oils include all CI-4 PLUS performance requirements. CI-4 PLUS appears in the lower portion of the API Service Symbol „Donut“.
The current and previous ILSAC standards and API Service Categories are listed here. Vehicle owners should refer to their owner’s manuals before consulting these charts. Oils may have more than one performance level.For automotive gasoline engines, the latest ILSAC standard or API Service Category includes the performance properties of eachearlier category and can be used to service older engines where earlier category oils were recommended.
ILSAC STANDARD FOR PASSENGER CAR ENGINE OILS
GF-5 - Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, more stringent sludge control, improved fuel economy, enhanced emission control system compatibility, seal compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.
GF-4 - Valid until September 30, 2011. Use GF-5 where GF-4 is recommended.
GF-3 - Use GF-5 where GF-3 is recommended.
GF-2 - Use GF-5 where GF-2 is recommended.
GF-1 - Use GF-5 where GF-1 is recommended.
GASOLINE / PETROL ENGINES
SN - Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons, more stringent sludge control, and seal compatibility.
API SN with Resource Conserving matches ILSAC GF-5 by combining API SN performance with improved fuel economy, turbocharger protection, emission control system compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.
SM - For 2010 and older automotive engines.
SL - For 2004 and older automotive engines.
SJ - For 2001 and older automotive engines.

DIESEL ENGINES
CJ-4 -For high-speed four-stroke cycle diesel engines designed to meet 2010 model year on-highway and Tier 4
nonroad exhaust emission standards as well as for previous model year diesel engines. These oils are formulated for use in all applications with diesel fuels ranging in sulfur content up to 500 ppm (0.05% by weight). However, the use of these oils with greater than 15 ppm (0.0015% by weight) sulfur fuel may impact exhaust aftertreatment system durability and/or drain interval. CJ-4 oils are especially effective at sustaining emission control system durability where particulate filters and other advanced aftertreatment systems are used. Optimum protection is provided for control of catalyst poisoning, particulate filter blocking, engine wear, piston deposits, low- and high-temperature stability, soot handling properties, oxidative thickening, foaming, and viscosity loss due to shear. API CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CI-4 with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and can effectively lubricate engines calling for those API Service Categories. When using CJ-4 oil with higher than 15 ppm sulfur fuel, consult the engine manufacturer for service interval.
CI-4 - Introduced in 2002. For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented in 2002. CI-4 oils are formulated to sustain engine durability where exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used and are intended for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulfur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, CG-4, and CH-4 oils. Some CI-4 oils may also qualify for the CI-4 PLUS designation.
CH-4 - Introduced in 1998. For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 1998 exhaust emission standards. CH-4 oils are specifically compounded for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulfur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4, and CG-4 oils.
CG-4 – OBSOLETE
* Introduced in 1995. For severe duty, high-speed, four-stroke engines using fuel with less than 0.5% weight
sulfur. CG-4 oils are required for engines meeting 1994 emission standards. Can be used in place of CD,
CE, and CF-4 oils.
CF-4 – OBSOLETE
*Introduced in 1990. For high-speed, four-stroke, naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Can be used in place of CD and CE oils.
CF-2 – OBSOLETE
* Introduced in 1994. For severe duty, two-stroke-cycle engines. Can be used in place of CD-II oils.
CF – OBSOLETE
* Introduced in 1994. For off-road, indirect-injected and other diesel engines including those using fuel with over 0.5% weight sulfur. Can be used in place of CD oils.

GUIDE TO SAE VISCOSITY GRADES OF MOTOR OIL FOR PASSENGER CARS
Multigrade oils such as SAE 5W-30 and 10W-40 are widely used because, under all but extremely hot or cold conditions, they are thin enough to flow at low temperatures and thick enough to perform satisfactorily at high temperatures. Note that vehicle requirements may vary.

SAE, ISO VG, AGMA - Oil Viscosity Designation, Viscosity Classifications
Oil viscosity is measured in several ways. The three main that we encounter in equipment manuals are:
SAE, ISO, and AGMA. People are most familiar with SAE, which stands for - Society of Automotive Engineers.
Engine oils viscosity is always measured in terms of SAE. Example like: SAE 0W-20, SAE 0W-30, SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-40, SAE 5W-30, SAE 5W-40, SAE 10W-40, SAE 15W-40, SAE 20W-50 and etc.
Next we have the ISO system which stands for - International Standardization Organization. Example like: ISO VG 10, ISO VG 22, ISO VG 32, ISO VG 46, ISO VG 68, ISO VG, ISO VG 100, ISO VG 150, ISO VG 220, ISO VG 320, ISO VG 460 … etc. The ISO VG (viscosity grade) scale is commonly used to measure the viscosity of industrial oils.
And last, but not least AGMA stands for - American Gear Manufacturers Association. Through the years, lubricant users have been treated to a number of ways to designate viscosity grades of the lubricants used in manufacturing. There are SAE - Society of Automotive Engineers grades for gear oils and crankcases (engines), AGMA - American Gear Manufacturers Association grades for gear oils, SUS - Saybolt Universal Seconds, cSt (Kinematic viscosity in centistokes) and absolute viscosity. To add to the confusion, two measures of temperature (Fahrenheit and Celsius) can be applied to most of these, not to mention that viscosity might be presented at either 40°C (104°F) or 100°C (212°F). To the new entrant into the lubrication field, the number of options can be confusing, particularly if the primary lubricant supplier does not associate one of the prominent viscosity systems to the product label. To complicate matters, machinery designers must define the lubricant viscosity in such a way that the equipment user understands clearly what is needed without having to consult outside advice. This help to the need for a universally accepted viscosity designation - one that can be used by lubrication practitioners, lubricant suppliers and machinery design engineers simultaneously with minimal confusion.

In 1975, the International Standards Organization (ISO), in unison with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE), British Standards Institute (BSI), and Deutsches Institute for Normung e. V. (DIN) settled upon an approach to minimize the confusion. It is known as the International Standards Organization Viscosity Grade, ISO VG.
Dynamic viscosity [mPa•s = cP]
The dynamic viscosity is the viscosity that relates shear stress τ and shear rate du/dz in a fluid, i.e. τ=η du/dz. The viscous shear stress τ is proportional to the shear rate, the dynamic viscosity η being the proportionality factor. So, thicker oils have a higher viscosity value causing relatively higher shear stresses at the same shear rate.
Dynamic viscosities are usually measured under high shear conditions, for example, the cone on plate or cylinder viscometer in which the viscous shear torque is measured between two cylinders.
With the viscosity known at two reference temperatures the viscosity can be calculated for intermediate temperatures with specific interpolation functions those from Reynolds or Vogel & Cameron.
Kinematic viscosity [mm2/s = cSt]
The kinematic viscosity is the quotient of the dynamic viscosity η and the fluid density ρ, ν=η/ρ. The physical principle of measurement is based on the rate at which a fluid flows under gravity through a capillary tube.
With the viscosity known at two reference temperatures the viscosity can be calculated for intermediate temperatures using the interpolation function of Ubbelohde - Walther, which is adopted by ASTM D341.
Viscosity Index ISO 2909 / ASTM D2270-226
In many cases the temperature dependency is expressed in the Viscosity Index standardized by ISO 2909 / ASTM D2270-226.
ISO 3448 Viscosity classification
The ISO viscosity classification is recommended for industrial applications. The reference temperature of 40 °C represents the operating temperature in machinery. Each subsequent Viscosity grade (VG) within the classification has approximately a 50% higher viscosity, whereas the minimum en maximum values of each grade ranges ±10% from the mid point. For example, ISO VG 22 refers to a viscosity grade of 22 cSt ± 10% at 40°C. The viscosity at different temperatures can be calculated using the viscosity at 40°C and the viscosity index (VI), which represents the temperature dependency of the lubricant.

The actual viscosity grade of a lubricant is determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers, for example

These qualifications define the characteristics to be complied with by the lubricants used in engines with Otto and Diesel cycle for the first time of filling and during service. The standard is formed of a series of tests in the laboratory and on the engine to assess the performance level of lubricants. The laboratory tests qualify the lubricant evaluating the viscosity, cold yield value, tendency to produce foam, corrosion on copper reed, behaviour with rubbers and resistance to oxidisation. The engine tests assess the performance levels of lubricants in terms of sticking rings, deposits on pistons, wear and also oil consumption of certain diesel and petrol engines which are the most representative of Fiat Auto’s most advanced technologies.

Dexron III licence H was introduced in June 2003 to replace the Dexron III G fluid. It has an oxidatively stable base oil (group 2 or group 3). Oils according to this specification have longer maintenance of friction properties and anti-shrudder properties, better foam control and a longer fluid life.
Dexron VI
Specification introduced in 2005 to replace Dexron IIIH. This specification requires better stay-in-grade properties, oxidative stability and anti-foam characteristics. Oils meeting this specification can be used with extended drain intervals and are energy conserving.

VW 507.00

This standard is not yet released. It will probably require a low SAPS oil with energy conserving properties.

FDA - Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA is part of the U.S. Government and among other activities establishes the requirements for the food, cosmetics and drug industries, including in the former’s case, incidental contact lubricants or lubricants designed for use in food machinery. FDA compliance and claims are made through self-certification by the company marketing the lubricant. The FDA regulates substances added to food or in contact with food as food additives.
Food Additives
Any substance in which the intended use results or may reasonably be expected to result, directly or indirectly, in it becoming a component or otherwise affecting the characteristic of any food.
Direct Additive
Added to food for a functional effect or used to process food (21 CFR Parts 172-173).
Indirect Additive
Used in food contact applications and may migrate into food (21 CFR Parts 175-178).
FDA CFR 178.3570
This is the self certification process to meet the FDA requirements for a lubricant for 'incidental food contact'.
This is not for lubricants directly in contact with food (such as mould release oils for bread making) but for those
lubricants that could potentially leak into and onto the food material. Products that comply should be formulated from materials identified in the FDA 21 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) or from the 'GRAS list' ie components that
are Generally Recognised As Safe.
USDA - United States Department of Agriculture.
The USDA was the original body that issued official authorisation to formulations and 'products for incidental contact' by review against the FDA requirements. If compliance was shown, the (USDA) H1 category was awarded to the lubricant. In 1998 however the USDA authorisation program was abandoned and the H1 approval process was transferred to the NSF as long as the company had been registered. Hence, as long as the transfer process was completed during the early 2000s, valid H1 registrations came under the auspices of the NSF.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) created the original food-grade designations H1, H2 and H3. The approval of a new lubricant and its registration in one of these categories depends on the list of the ingredients.
H1 lubricants are food-grade lubricants used in food-processing environments where there is the possibility of incidental food contact.
H2 lubricants are food-grade lubricants used on equipment and machine parts in locations where there is no possibility of contact.
H3 lubricants are food-grade lubricants, typically edible oils, used to prevent rust on hooks, trolleys and similar equipment.
Know the difference between H1 and H2 lubricants?
In food processing plants, it's important that operations and maintenance managers understand the difference between H1 and H2 lubricants. H1 lubricants are suitable for incidental, technically unavoidable contact with a food product. These lubricants may be safely used for handling, canning, bottling, blending, chilling, cooking, cutting, slicing and peeling, on machinery components such as pumps, mixers, gearboxes, chain drives and conveyor belts. H1 lubricants may be used above the line. H2 lubricants are suitable for use in food processing applications, provided that contact with the food product is absolutely impossible. H2 lubricants may be used below the line.
NFS - National Sanitation Foundation.
The NSF is a US based, not-for-profit, non governmental organization that provides standards development,
product registrations, product certifications and riskmanagement services for public health and safety. It identifies the needs of the public and industry to generate and manage a list of Proprietary Substances and Non Food Compounds, which lubricants are included.
NSF H1 Registered Lubricants.
NSF H1 lubricants are in practice potential 'indirect food additives' as they may have incidental contact with food
due to leaks, spillages or faults in the equipment. The NSF has established a list of H1 registered lubricants based on review of the lubricant suppliers’ data against the requirements of the FDA and prior USDA reviews. It
registers these products once they have confirmed the material is in compliance with the FDA/GRAS listings and
places them on their web-site for public access under the On-Line book.
HACCP - Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points.
Developed by NASA in the 1960s to help protect astronauts, HACCP is a systematic, scientific based process system to identify, evaluate and manage food safety hazards in processing, packaging and transportation and helps identify ways to control or prevent them to ensure food production is safe. It identifies many aspects of food safety including contaminations with non food stuffs, bacterial control and risk identification. HACCP has become an important tool globally for regulators, customers and recipients.
Kosher
Kosher foods are those that conform to Jewish dietary law. Certain animal species are allowed such as cattle, sheep, poultry and fish whereas pigs and shellfish are not. Foods that contain no dairy or meat content are known as Parve, examples being most drinks, all fruit and simple raw vegetables. The assessment of the manufacture and suitability of a lubricant that confirms to Kosher is made on the formulation and manufacturing procedure through a technical and religious certification process. The formulation is assessed on its basic ingredients and the manufacturing facility is audited on a regular basis to assess the risk of contamination by non Kosher materials.
Halal
Halal is an Arabic term meaning 'permissible'. In English it frequently refers to food that is permissible according to Islamic law. A variety of substances are considered forbidden which includes pork and pig based products, blood and all intoxicants, including alcohol. The assessment of whether a lubricant is suitable for Halal is very similar to that for Kosher. The ingredients of the oil or grease are reviewed technically and the manufacturing facility audited for its internal quality processes and potential crosscontamination. Certificates of conformity are normally issued.
ISO 22000
The ISO 22000 standard - Food Safety Management Systems - integrates the HACCP principles, system management and interactive communication between organisations in the food supply chain. ISO 22000 specifies the requirements needed for food safety management for each organisation in the food chain to ensure the final food is safe for human consumption.

What is a Food Grade Lubricant?
Food-grade lubricants must perform the same technical functions as any other lubricant: provide protection against wear, friction, corrosion and oxidation, dissipate heat and transfer power, be compatible with rubber and other sealing materials, as well as provide a sealing effect in some cases. In addition, different applications within the food and drugs business demand that lubricants resist degradation from food products, chemicals and water, steam, must exhibit a neutral behavior toward plastics and elastomers, and have the ability to dissolve sugars. These oils must also comply with food, health and safety regulations, as well as be physiologically inert, tasteless and internationally approved.
Lubricants can be subjected to intense environmental contaminants. A corn-milling environment generates significant dust. Although not as hard as silica-based dust, it still presents a problem for filtration. A meat plant requires stringent steam cleaning at all times, so the risk of water contamination is high. Some plants experience as much as 15 percent by volume of water in their gear oils. Another aspect of lubrication contamination that poses a risk to food-grade lubricants is the growth of microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast and fungi. While these can be a risk in industrial environments, the opportunity for contamination in the food-production environment is even greater.

Base Oil Groups, API Base Oil Definitions
Base Oil groups
The American Petroleum Institute (API) designates several types of lubricant base oil:
Group I – Saturates <90% and/or sulfur >0.03%, and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) viscosity index (VI) of 80 to 120
Manufactured by solvent extraction, solvent or catalytic dewaxing, and hydro-finishing processes. Common Group I base oil are 150SN (solvent neutral), 500SN, and 150BS (brightstock)
Group II – Saturates over 90% and sulfur under 0.03%, and SAE viscosity index of 80 to 120
Manufactured by hydrocracking and solvent or catalytic dewaxing processes. Group II base oil has superior anti-oxidation properties since virtually all hydrocarbon molecules are saturated. It has water-white color.
Group III – Saturates > 90%, sulfur <0.03%, and SAE viscosity index over 120
Manufactured by special processes such as isohydromerization. Can be manufactured from base oil or slax wax from dewaxing process.
Group IV – Polyalphaolefins (PAO)
Group V – All others not included above such as naphthenics, PAG, Esters.
In North America, Groups III, IV and V are now described as synthetic lubricants, with group III frequently described as synthesised hydrocarbons, or SHCs. In Europe, only Groups IV and V may be classed as synthetics.
The lubricant industry commonly extends this group terminology to include:
Group I+ with a Viscosity Index of 103–108
Group II+ with a Viscosity Index of 113–119
Group III+ with a Viscosity Index of at least 140
Can also be classified into three categories depending on the prevailing compositions:
Paraffinic
Naphthenic
Aromatic
Lubricants for internal combustion engines contain additives to reduce oxidation and improve lubrication. The main constituent of such lubricant product is called the base oil, base stock. While it is advantageous to have a high-grade base oil in a lubricant, proper selection of the lubricant additives is equally as important. Typically lubricants contain 90% base oil and appr.10% lubricants additives.
Base stocks
Base oils have variety of several different names: Neutrals (100 N, 150 N, 600 N, …), Bright Stocks, grades (with regard to their finished lubricant: SAE 5, 10…; or standard tests: ISO 22, 32,...). The most common names are for Group I (SN: Solvent Neutral, example SN 100, SN 150, SN 500), for Group II (N: Neutrals) and Group III grade names refer to the viscosity (4cst, 6cst, 8cst …) at 100°C. Grade names can also refer to trademarks.

DIN 51524 hydraulic oils.
Hydraulic oils do not have uniform quality and viscosity classifications. Practically every manufacturer of hydraulic systems and equipment defines special requirements for oil.
The most common standards are DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.) standard and ISO VG (Viscosity Grade).
The most common hydraulic oils classifications and specifications:
DIN 51524 HVLP – lubricants have additives that protect from corrosion, oxidation and wear, plus additives increasing their Viscosity Index (VI >140, pressure >100 bar). They are intended for universal application, however the biggest advantage is provided when used in external hydraulic systems.
DIN 51524 HLP – lubricants have additives from corrosion, oxidation and wearing (VI >80-100, pressure >100bar). They are intended for universal application and they are recommended for use in internal hydraulic systems.
DIN 51524 HL ‒ lubricants have additives protecting from corrosion and oxidation (VG >80-100, pressure >100bar). They are recommended for use in low pressure internal hydraulic systems.
ISO 6743-4 classification for hydraulic oils:
ISO – L – HH – Mineral lubricants without corrosion inhibitors
ISO – L – HL – Lubricants HH with oxidation-reduction and anticorrosive additives
ISO – L – HM – HL lubricants with wear reducing additives
ISO – L – HR – HL lubricants with a high viscosity index
ISO – L – HV – HM lubricants with a high viscosity index

DIN 51506 VDL - lubricants with additives that protect from corrosion and oxidation and air compression temperatures up to 220°C; recommended for compressors with two stage air compression.
DIN 51506 VCL - lubricants have additives that protect from corrosion and oxidation and air compression temperatures up to 160°C.
DIN 51506 VBL - lubricants have additives that protect from corrosion and oxidation and air compression temperatures up to 140°C.
DIN 51515 classifications for turbine oils and lubricants.
The most common are following specifications:
DIN 51515-2 L-TG – lubricants recommended for use at higher temperatures than usual.
DIN 51515-1L-TD – lubricants recommended for use in normal temperature ranges.
DIN 51517 classifications for reducer lubricants.
The most common are as follows:
DIN 51517 CGLP – lubricants have additives that protect from corrosion, oxidation and wear in mixed friction locations and additives improving the surface friction characteristics.
DIN 51517-3 CLP – lubricants have additives that protect from corrosion, oxidation and wear in mixed friction locations.
DIN 51517-2 CL – lubricants have additives that protect from corrosion and oxidation, and are suitable for medium load conditions.
DIN 51503 classifications of refrigeration compressor lubricants.
The most common are as follows:
DIN 51503 KA – lubricants suitable for refrigeration systems with ammonia.
DIN 51503 KC – lubricants suitable for refrigeration systems with chlorinated chloroflourocarbons.
DIN 51825 classifications for plastic greases.
The most common are as follows:
DIN 51825 K – grease made from high viscosity mineral and/or synthetic oil with a thickener.
DIN 51825 KP-K – grease made from additional additives that reduce friction and protect against wear in mixed friction locations. DIN 51825 KF – K grease with additional hard additives (graphite, molybdenum disulfide).
DIN 51825 KPF – K grease with additional additives that reduce friction and protect against wear in mixed friction locations, plus additional hard additives (graphite, molybdenum disulfide).

Classification of greases by NLGI consistency number
A measure of the stiffness of a grease. The consistency is classified according to a scale developed by the NLGI (National Lubricating Grease Institute). This is based on the degree of penetration achieved by allowing a standard cone to sink into the grease at a temperature of 25 °C for a period of five seconds. The depth of penetration is measured on a scale of 10-1 mm and the softer greases allow the cone to penetrate further into the grease, hence the higher penetration number. The test method is in accordance to DIN ISO 2137.

Guideline for storage of Lubrita transformer oil in drums
Lubrita transformer oils and handling.
Lubrita Trafo Univolta 13X (inhibited transformer oil) and Lubrita Trafo Univolta 13T (uninhibited transformer oil) are produced, stored and handled with the aim to achieve the best possible performance in transformers. It is of great importance to avoid contamination of polar compounds, water, mechanical impurities etc, to maintain the properties of the oil. Drums (empty or filled) are handled with care by Lubrita International in order to avoid damage, and contamination during transport, storage, drum filling, etc. All drums are stored indoors or under a roof on a flat, clean ground, protected from rain, snow, dirt and direct sunlight. If storage under a roof is not possible, drums are always stored upside down or in a horizontal position. Only new drums with Lubrita design and structure previously approved by Lubrita are used for transformer oils.
The oil passes through a special filter when filled into drums. Shrink wrapping may also be available upon request (increased cost). At the customer site the drums should be stored inside or under a roof on a flat, clean ground,
protected from dirt, rain, snow and direct sunlight. If storage under a roof is not possible, they shall be stored upside down or in a horizontal position. The shelf life will be affected by temperature changes so the drums must be kept as cool as possible during storage. If there is some oil remaining in a partly used drum it should be stored
on its side, protected as above, with the oil level above the bund. Special attention should be given to the rubber gasket around the bung when closing it as tightening it too hard will cause damage. It is not advisable to store half-emptied drums for long periods due to the risk of contamination. Unopened transformer oil drums, stored under above stated conditions and not damaged, are expected to be within specification for at least one year.
